PM’s TROPHY FOR BHILAI – 11th TIME
New Delhi/Rourkela: Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship unit of Maharatna company Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), bagged the Prime Minister’s Trophy for the Best Performing Integrated Steel Plant (ISP) in the country for the year 2011–12. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi presented the trophy for Best Integrated Steel Plant to BSP, SAIL, at Rourkela on the occasion of dedicating the modernized and expanded Rourkela Steel Plant to the nation on 1st April 2015. SAIL Chairman Mr. C.S. Verma and Chief Executive Officer of BSP, Shri S. Chandrasekaran, received the trophy from the Hon’ble PM.
With this, BSP achieved the unparalleled distinction of being the only steel plant in the country—public or private—to have received this pinnacle recognition an unprecedented 11 times out of the 21 times the award has been given so far. This speaks volumes about the commitment and dedication of the workforce of Bhilai Steel Plant.
The award, which also carries a cash reward of ₹2 crore, is given to integrated steel plants (ISPs) based on an evaluation by a panel of judges appointed annually. The coveted Prime Minister’s Trophy is awarded to an ISP for their overall performance, judged on objective parameters, enabling factors, customer satisfaction index, and observations made during plant visits.
SAIL’s Bhilai Plant has consistently outperformed other steel plants in the country in various parameters including productivity, profitability, quality, product development, systems, work culture, human resource development, deployment of IT-driven modern business tools, sustainability practices, and corporate social responsibility.
Steel from Bhilai has been used in various strategic sectors and projects of national importance such as defence, power, infrastructure, heavy machinery, oil and gas, railways, space, and atomic energy. The entire network of Indian Railways runs on rails supplied by Bhilai Steel Plant, which has been supplying rails since its inception. Indian Railways sources rails up to lengths of 260 metres from Bhilai.
Known for its culture of excellence and dedication to quality, the plant has achieved distinction in various enabling parameters including leadership, policy & strategy, people development, resource management, and process management. Its deployment of modern IT-driven business and knowledge tools to ensure excellence, continuous performance improvement, environmental conservation, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability practices has enabled it to maintain a leadership position in the Indian steel industry.
It may be recalled that apart from the PM’s Trophy for 2011–12, BSP had earlier won the first two PM’s Trophies for the years 1992–93 and 1993–94. The plant made a hat-trick by winning the trophy for the years 1995–96, 1996–97, and 1997–98. It again won the trophy for two consecutive years—2003–04 and 2004–05—and repeated this feat by winning in 2006–07, 2007–08, and 2009–10.
