SAIL to commission new Hot Strip Mill at Rourkela soon: Chairman SAIL

New Additional Heat Treatment Line inaugurated at Special Plate Plant, RSP to strengthen supply for defence sector

Chairman, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) Shri Anil Kumar Chaudhary while visiting Rourkela Steel Plant today congratulated RSP collective which is in its 60th year of production and said that in this milestone year the theme of celebration would be Safety, Health and Environment. During his address, he emphasized on early completion of the new 3.0 Million Tonnes per annum (MTPA) Hot Strip Mill (HSM). Shri Chaudhary said that the new HSM should be completed by the beginning of next financial year; which will augment the Plant's hot rolled steel making capacity along with enabling RSP to produce advance grade HR coils. This will help RSP to cater to the high end HR Steel segment and facilitate for supplying to Cold Rolling Mills producing auto grade steel, as per requirement.

During this visit, Shri Chaudhary inaugurated the Additional Heat Treatment Line (AHTL) of the Special Plate Plant (SPP) of RSP. The Special Plate Plant has been catering to the needs of the Nation's defence and research programmes and has supplied steel for India's indigenous defence projects like INS Vikrant, INS Kamorta etc. Built at a cost of Rs 155 Crore, this AHTL facility will augment the heat treatment capacity of Special Plate Plant and will help the Plant to meet the enhanced demand for defence grade special steel of various dimensions. Different grades of plates including Spade, Jackal, DMR-249 A & B, SAIL WR-400, ASTM -537 CL-II, DMR-301 will be heat treated in the AHTL. The special plate plant unit is a pioneer in the field of special steel plates; with a diverse product profile that ranges from various grades of heat treated plates.

Shri Chaudhary also added that RSP's steel-making capacity has to be in-line with the enhanced hot metal capacity of the Plant. Prioritizing volume growth, he said the new facilities and mills can be utilized at their rated capacities when we have the desired levels of steel making. He emphasized on bringing a new Caster 4 and also fully utilizing the Blast Furnace 4.

Shri Chaudhary emphasized on following safety measures in all processes at all plants and said we have to focus on more sustainable processes which are environment friendly. He also mentioned the special project taken up by RSP for utilising waste plastic in construction of road and said that such initiatives will bring a significant change. Reiterating SAIL's commitment towards bringing meaningful change in people's lives, he said health is an important factor and RSP is adding value in the health facilities at IGH hospital to provide quality health care and services.

Shri Chaudhary, who is interacting with cross section of employees in a structured one-to-one manner at every unit of the Company, also visited the newly rebuilt Blast Furnace-1, Special Plate Plant (SPP), New Hot Strip Mill project site and New Plate Mill. Shri Chaudhary was accompanied by Functional Directors and Shri Ashwini Kumar, CEO RSP and also interacted with around 500 employees during his visit.
