Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) today signed an MoU for skill development in steel sector at SAIL Ispat Bhwan, Lodi Road. This MoU has been signed as a follow up to the MoU signed between Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Ministry of Steel (MoS) on July 10, 2015. The MoU between SAIL and NSDC will focus on three areas including - skilling of on-roll employees of SAIL, skilling of off-roll manpower working in SAIL and skilling of local youth for future employability and income generation.
Under this MoU, five thrust areas have been identified to support the above initiatives, which are - Skill Development Centers (SDCs) at Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela and Durgapur, Skill Development Centre of Excellence for Iron & Steel in the vicinity of IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, System of Certifying and Recognizing Prior Learning (RPL) of workforce, Upgrading SAIL training infrastructure and aligning with Quality Packs (QPs)/ National Occupational Standard (NOS) developed by Indian Iron and Steel Sector Skill Council (IISSSC) and lastly fresh skilling of local youth for employability.
This MoU between SAIL and NSDC is signed to collaborate and support skill development initiatives in the vicinity of SAIL Plants for meeting the requirement of skilled manpower and developing industrial ecosystem of the area. In Steel Industry, at present, there is a shortage of skilled manpower in the fields of advanced technologies such as hydraulics, electrics, automation, bearings, etc. Also, there is lack of skilled manpower in common engineering skills such as welding, plumbing, fitting, rigging, etc.
Specific modalities will be worked out for each of the above initiatives, giving details of scope, roles and responsibilities, financial obligations, source of funding, monitoring mechanism for implementation, etc.
